According to a report by The Sun News, on Thursday, May 28, 2026, lawyer and public affairs commentator Ejeh Monday Ejeh cautioned former President Goodluck Jonathan against joining the 2027 presidential race, warning that such a move could damage the reputation he built while serving the country.
Ejeh argued that there were strong indications that some politicians from the North were encouraging Jonathan to contest for reasons that may not ultimately favour him.
According to him, the former president was being positioned as a political tool to disrupt the South’s expected eight-year hold on power.
He maintained that allowing himself to be drawn into the race could expose Jonathan to political embarrassment and weaken the respect he currently enjoys across the country.
Speaking further, Ejeh stressed that Jonathan should resist any pressure to return to the contest for the presidency.
The former president’s participation would not produce victory for him but would instead only divide votes from the South.
He Said, “He will not win. He will only be a spoiler, at the best. And this spoiler duty will destroy whatever name he has built for himself.”
The legal practitioner added that Jonathan should rather preserve the goodwill and dignity he left office with after completing his tenure.
He insisted that political power should remain in the South for another four years before eventually shifting back to the North for the next eight years afterward.
According to him, maintaining such an arrangement would help preserve political balance and stability in the country.
The report also noted that any possible presidential ambition by Jonathan in 2027 would appear to contradict the public position earlier expressed by his wife, former First Lady Patience Jonathan.
During an event hosted in Abuja by the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Patience Jonathan openly declared that her husband had moved on from presidential politics and would not challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the coming election.
At the gathering, the former First Lady pledged loyalty and support to the current administration, emphasizing that Nigeria can only have one president at a time.
She explained that she strongly believes in political rotation and taking turns in leadership.
Patience Jonathan also recalled how Oluremi Tinubu stood by her own husband during previous elections and said she could not turn against someone she considers a friend.
According to her, leadership should be approached with fairness and respect for political understanding.
She remarked that when it is someone’s turn to lead, others should support that person, and when their own turn is over, they should step aside to allow the country move ahead peacefully.
Meanwhile, the report suggested that the possibility of Jonathan appearing on the ballot in 2027 may be causing concern within President Tinubu’s political camp.
It recalled that in September last year, former Information Minister and Peoples Democratic Party chieftain, Professor Jerry Gana, confidently stated that Jonathan would participate in the next presidential election.
Reacting to the claim at the time, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga dismissed the suggestion, describing it as unrealistic.
He insisted that President Tinubu would comfortably defeat Jonathan if the former president eventually entered the race.
Onanuga also hinted that the presidency could challenge Jonathan’s eligibility in court on the grounds that he had already taken the presidential oath of office twice…..See More
