According to a report by the Punch on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, fresh tension has erupted within the African Democratic Congress following the rejection of the party’s presidential primary election results by former Rivers State Governor and presidential aspirant, Rotimi Amaechi.
Amaechi, who contested alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and economist Mohammed Hayatu-Deen for the party’s presidential ticket, described the results announced from across the country as manipulated and lacking credibility.
In a statement shared on his verified X handle, the former Minister of Transportation alleged that the exercise held across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory was marred by widespread voter disenfranchisement and irregularities.
He insisted that the process failed to meet the standard of transparency and fairness expected of a party positioning itself as a credible alternative ahead of the 2027 general election.
Amaechi said, “eighty per cent of members of the party were not allowed to vote, and you expect me to accept such results,” as he firmly rejected the outcome of the exercise.
He maintained that he had earlier made it clear he would only accept the result if the process was free, fair and transparent, stressing that anything short of that would undermine the values the party claims to represent.
The former governor further argued that the ADC was established to offer Nigerians a platform built on integrity and fairness, warning that any attempt to replicate the alleged electoral malpractice often criticised in other parties would damage its credibility.
His protest came just hours after fellow aspirant Mohammed Hayatu-Deen also boycotted the final collation and declaration ceremony in Abuja over alleged irregularities.
Despite the complaints raised by two of the three contestants, collation of results continued at the Transcorp Hilton Abuja, where results from states across the federation showed Atiku maintaining a commanding lead.
As of late Tuesday night, Atiku had secured victories in most of the announced states, including the Federal Capital Territory, Gombe, Ekiti, Edo, Enugu, Benue, Ondo, Abia and Yobe, placing him far ahead of Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen……See More
