Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has responded to criticism from a social media user who accused her of remaining silent over the reported abduction of children in Oyo State despite her active involvement in the #BringBackOurGirls campaign following the Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction in 2014.
Ezekwesili made her position known through a statement shared on her official X account on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, insisting that she has consistently continued to demand accountability from government authorities on issues affecting Nigerians.
The controversy began after an X user questioned her silence regarding recent insecurity incidents, particularly kidnappings involving children in Oyo State.
According to the social media user, Ezekwesili was vocal during the Chibok Girls abduction under a previous administration but has not shown the same level of public activism concerning more recent incidents.
The user wrote, “Dear Oby Ezekwesili, I have great respect for you but on this, you’re culpable. In 2015, you staged a #BringBackOurGirls protest for the Chibok Girls. How come you’re quiet about recent kidnaps? Can’t you mobilize again for a protest?”
The comment quickly attracted reactions online, with many users debating whether public figures and activists should sustain the same level of engagement on insecurity issues regardless of the government in power.
Responding to the criticism, Ezekwesili rejected the claim that she had remained silent, stressing that she has consistently spoken out on governance, accountability and democratic reforms in Nigeria.
“I have never stopped demanding accountability from government,” Ezekwesili stated on her official X account.
The former minister further explained that her activism did not end with the #BringBackOurGirls movement, noting that she has remained actively involved in civic engagement and advocacy efforts across different national issues.
“Only recently, I was on the streets advocating for electoral reforms and demanding better governance,” she added.
Ezekwesili also appeared to suggest that activism should not always be measured solely by street protests or media visibility, emphasizing that sustained advocacy takes different forms.
According to her, citizens have a responsibility to continue holding leaders accountable regardless of which political party is in power.
