In a recent video shared on Arise TV, on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, Dr. Umar Ardo, a former APC chieftain and leading promoter of the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), discussed the political calculations that could shape the 2027 presidential election, particularly the influence of regional voting blocs and opposition coalition efforts.
During the interview, Ardo stated, “Atiku will get Muslim North votes just as Obi will get Southeast votes.” He made the remark while analyzing the electoral strengths of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi in the context of a potential opposition alliance ahead of the next general election.
According to Ardo, voting patterns in Nigeria have historically reflected strong regional and demographic considerations, making it important for political strategists to understand where candidates command their strongest support. He argued that both Atiku and Obi possess loyal political bases that could play a significant role in determining the outcome of the 2027 election.
Ardo explained that Atiku’s longstanding political presence in Northern Nigeria, particularly among Muslim voters in the region, gives him a substantial advantage in that part of the country. At the same time, he noted that Obi continues to enjoy considerable popularity in the Southeast, where he has built a strong political following over the years.
He further stated that while regional support remains important, no presidential candidate can secure victory based solely on votes from a single region. According to him, any serious contender must also develop a national appeal capable of attracting support across Nigeria’s diverse political and ethnic landscape.
The former APC chieftain emphasized that opposition parties seeking to challenge the ruling party in 2027 would need to carefully manage competing interests while building a broad coalition capable of mobilizing voters nationwide. He maintained that unity among opposition leaders could significantly influence the electoral landscape.
Ardo concluded that the success of any political alliance ahead of the 2027 elections will depend not only on the popularity of individual candidates but also on their ability to expand beyond their traditional support bases and present a compelling national vision to Nigerians…..See More
