Amidst growing fears of regional destabilization and explicit allegations that South-West governors across the federation are prioritizing political signaling over genuine human security, a prominent diaspora socio-cultural organization, Egbe Omo Yoruba North America, has fiercely condemned South-West governors for their alleged complacency and structural failure in handling the region’s deteriorating security situation.
According to a report by Punch Newspapers on Friday, June 5, 2026, the organization, in an official communiqué, claimed that political leaders have completely abandoned their constitutional duty to safeguard lives and property, exposing vulnerable communities to unchecked terrorism.
The organization’s scathing rebuke was triggered by the mass abduction of approximately 39 elementary school students and seven teachers across three different schools in the Esiele and Yawota communities of Oriire Local Government Area, Oyo State.
Egbe Omo Yoruba also alleged that the Western Nigeria Security Network, popularly known as Amotekun, has been systemically hollowed out and rendered ineffective. The group insisted that while governors happily claim political credit for establishing the regional task force, they have intentionally denied the operatives the critical operational support, modern communication gadgets, and defensive equipment needed to confront heavily armed kidnapping rings.
The organization further explained that local forces remain severely paralyzed because the Federal Government continues to block critical security decentralization while ignoring the unique threats facing the South-West, pointing out that the central administration has consistently paid insufficient attention to the region’s rural vulnerabilities, leaving local communities completely exposed to armed incursions.
The socio-cultural body stated: “We are alarmed at the attitude and complacency of the Southwest governors and the governor of Oyo State, who is expected by his constitutional duty to safeguard lives and property in the state. Children represent the future of any society or nation, and the inability to protect them from any form of kidnapping represents a society on the brink of moral and political bankruptcy.”
