According to a report by Trust TV, on Saturday August 29, 2026, Sitting in his residence in Gboko, Benue State, First Republic politician and former Minister, Chief Isaac Shaahu, provided a rare window into his early life, political journey, and long-standing perspectives on nationhood.
At 93 years old, Chief Shaahu one of the few surviving members of Nigeria’s Northern House of Assembly from the 1960s recounted the humble roots of his upbringing and the early foundation laid by his father, a rural road maker.
Reflecting on his birth and childhood, the nonagenarian elder statesman shared the details of his origin and his late father’s early education.
“Well, my father was a road maker. So he was educated small, primary education., he was a road maker,” Chief Shaahu recalled.
When questioned about the certainty of his age and birth year, Chief Shaahu noted that while there was no official civic birth registration at the time, his father meticulously documented the event by hand:
“I was born in 1935, right? He wrote my birth, certificate. I called it a certificate later on, but he wrote it in his hand, right.”
When asked if he was entirely sure of being born in 1935, Chief Shaahu added warmly:
“1935, I’m not sure. He wrote it with his hand.”
