Rev Joseph Hayab, a Christian cleric and prominent religious affairs commentator, has criticised Sheikh Jingir over remarks in which Christians were allegedly described as infidels, questioning the appropriateness of such language from a religious leader.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Monday, 10 August, 2026, Hayab expressed disappointment over what he described as an unacceptable reference to him and other Christians as infidels, particularly in a gathering where religious leaders were expected to demonstrate understanding and respect.
“How could someone in such a gathering call me, Rev Joseph Hayab an infidel or call every Christian an infidel. He does not even have the courtesy to understand as a cleric.”
Hayab’s comments followed controversy surrounding Sheikh Jingir’s remarks on Nigeria’s religious identity and the debate over a Muslim-Muslim ticket. Jingir had reportedly said Nigeria is a Muslim country and suggested that those who do not want to accept a Muslim-Muslim ticket should leave the country.
Reacting to the development, Hayab questioned the basis for labelling Christians as infidels, particularly in a country where people of different faiths coexist and participate in national affairs.
He also criticised what he described as a lack of courtesy in the manner the statement was made, arguing that religious leaders should understand the implications of their words, especially when addressing issues involving followers of another faith.
