According to a report by Daily Post on Friday, June 05, 2026, Bishop Emeka Nwankpa, a senatorial aspirant for Abia Central under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has been arraigned by the Anambra State Government alongside several other clerics over allegations of fake prophecies and miracles.
Nwankpa, a cleric based in Onitsha and originally from Abia State, appeared before the Anambra State High Court in Awka with seven other pastors accused of conducting deceptive spiritual activities.
The case has triggered reactions across religious and political circles, with supporters describing the prosecution as unfair and politically motivated.
Speaking on behalf of the cleric, media aide Stanley Nduagu rejected the allegations, insisting that Bishop Nwankpa has maintained an unblemished ministry record for more than 25 years. He added that the claims were unsubstantiated and lacked credible evidence.
Community members from Isiala Ngwa in Abia State also expressed concern over the arrest, calling for his immediate release and questioning the basis of the charges.
One resident, Ngozi Ahunanya, accused the state authorities of targeting Christian leaders, alleging what she described as an attempt to suppress religious practice, a claim the government has not publicly addressed.
Political voices have also weighed in. Francess Olisa Ogbonnaya, House of Assembly candidate for Arochukwu under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), condemned the arrest, describing it as unnecessary harassment of clergy and worshippers.
The Anambra State Government has not issued a detailed public response outlining the evidence behind the allegations, while proceedings continue in court.
The case has drawn wider attention due to Bishop Nwankpa’s political involvement, with debates emerging over the intersection of religious practice, public accountability, and political activity in the region.
Authorities say the trial will proceed as scheduled as the court considers the charges brought against the accused clerics.
