The political atmosphere in Nigeria continues to heat up as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has taken a firm swipe at opposition movements, dismissing their unity efforts as hollow and self-serving. Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television, Wike reacted to the resignation of Babachir Lawal from the Coalition ADC, using the development as proof that opposition alliances lack both direction and credibility.
Wike did not mince words as he described many of the emerging opposition groups as nothing more than “mushroom political parties,” suggesting they are formed out of convenience rather than genuine commitment to national progress. According to him, what Nigerians are witnessing is not a coalition driven by ideology or shared vision, but a gathering of individuals motivated by personal interests and grievances.
He emphasized that many of these political actors only come together when they feel sidelined or dissatisfied with the current administration. In his view, their criticisms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government are not rooted in patriotism, but in frustration over unmet expectations.
In his words, he said, “During my media chat, I did say there’s no Coalition this morning, all you see is personal selfish interest. The moment they quarrel with leadership of a country or they’ve not gotten what they want, they will call Tinubu, they will gather together and say this government(Tinubu Administration) is not doing well. We are the face of the new people, we’re the one that will give the people the change that they require.”
Wike’s remarks highlight a growing divide in Nigeria’s political landscape, where accusations and counter-accusations have become the norm. His comments suggest a deep skepticism toward opposition figures, portraying them as opportunists rather than credible alternatives.
As the nation gradually approaches another electoral cycle, statements like these are likely to shape public perception and fuel further debate. Whether Nigerians will align with Wike’s perspective or see merit in the opposition’s claims remains to be seen. However, one thing is certain—the battle for political dominance is far from over, and the rhetoric is only getting stronger…..See More
