Umar Sani, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said Lagos State, once Nigeria’s most indebted state, has improved its debt situation over time under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
In an interview with NIGERIAN TRIBUNE on Sunday, May 3, 2026, Sani said that substantial federal allocations and approvals for major projects in Lagos, including the renovation of key infrastructure such as the Third Mainland Bridge, indicate that significant national resources are being channelled into the state. He argued that this highlights Lagos’ political and economic significance within the federation.
He further maintained that Lagos is no longer classified among Nigeria’s debtor states, noting that the change reflects a shift in its financial standing. According to him, this development may also have political implications, as Lagos remains a key base of support, though he suggested its influence may be geographically concentrated.
He said, “Lagos used to be the number one debtor state in Nigeria. But since Tinubu came in, their debt has been wiped off. Lagos is no longer a debtor state in the federation. So, you can see that Lagos people can vote for him, but that’s where his popularity will start and end.”…….See More
