According to a report by Daily Post on Saturday, May 2, 2026, elder statesman and former chieftain of the New Nigerian People’s Party, Buba Galadima, has stated that the African Democratic Congress may not be able to present candidates for the 2027 general elections.
He made the remark while speaking at a political gathering known as the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement summit held in Abuja on Saturday.
His comments focused on the current legal and political challenges facing opposition parties and the implications of recent court decisions on party participation in future elections.
Galadima explained that there are ongoing efforts that could affect the ability of the African Democratic Congress to field candidates in the next election cycle.
According to him, some of the developments within the political and legal environment are part of a wider process that may restrict the party’s participation in the electoral process.
He said he had previously raised concerns about such a possibility over a year ago, warning that legal actions could be used in ways that might weaken the operational capacity of some political parties.
His remarks suggested that these concerns are now becoming more visible in the current political situation.
He also spoke about the relationship between key political figures within the opposition space, including supporters of former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Galadima indicated that discussions and alignments among political actors are ongoing as they consider possible alternatives ahead of the 2027 elections.
He suggested that these conversations are part of broader efforts to reorganise political strategies in response to developments within existing political parties.
The summit where he spoke brought together supporters and political associates who are exploring new political arrangements and collaborations.
During his address, Galadima referred to recent judicial decisions, including a Supreme Court ruling delivered earlier in the week, as part of a wider political process affecting opposition parties.
He described the situation as one that could influence the future participation of certain political platforms in electoral contests.
He argued that court judgments and legal processes are becoming central factors in shaping the structure of party competition in Nigeria.
According to him, these developments may have significant implications for aspirants who intend to contest elections under affected political parties.
He further stated that political competition in the country is currently experiencing intense legal and structural challenges, particularly for opposition parties seeking to strengthen their positions ahead of future elections.
He noted that the legal environment is increasingly influencing how parties operate and how candidates emerge for elections.
Galadima maintained that these circumstances require political actors to carefully evaluate their options and consider alternative arrangements where necessary.
He also suggested that political strategies are being adjusted in response to the evolving situation within the country’s electoral system.
He said, “I said this since one and a half years ago in the press that Tinubu will try to stifle the political parties, that Tinubu wants to run as a sole candidate in Nigeria, and today, it is happening. The judgements that were delivered on Wednesday and Thursday, to any clever man, was a trap set for ADC to which most of us here belong.”…..See More
