Alhaji Yerima Shettima, President of the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF), recently gave an interview to The Sun in which he discussed the ongoing political turmoil that is occurring in Rivers State. He placed a strong emphasis on the governor’s sole responsibility for overseeing the business of the state and ensuring that order is maintained.
Shettima emphasised the importance of the governor taking firm action against lawlessness inside the state, highlighting the fact that lawlessness cannot be accepted within the state. It was brought to his attention that it is the responsibility of the governor to address any problems and to maintain stability.
When queried about the possibility of interventions from other sources, Shettima confirmed that the governor is the top authority figure in the Rivers State Government. He explained that no other body, including the Federal Government, possesses the authority to undertake peace procedures that go beyond the framework established by the Constitution.
When Shettima was asked about the role that former Governor Nyesom Wike, who is now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, played, she acknowledged Wike’s engagement but emphasised that the final responsibility lies with the current Governor, Simi Fubara. It was emphasised by him how vital it was for Fubara to make use of his position in order to bring back order.
Shettima made it clear that Rivers State’s governance is the sole responsibility of its governor. He reiterated that external powers cannot interfere and that the governor must decisively handle the state’s internal matters to uphold law and order. Shettima stressed that while Wike’s past leadership is acknowledged, the present and future of Rivers State lie in Governor Simi Fubara’s hands. He called on Fubara to assert his authority and take responsibility for the state’s stability and governance.
Hear him: “Rivers is a state of its own. The governor is the one in charge of the state and as such all powers are in his hands. He must take responsibility for whatever is happening in Rivers State. No power outside the state can work against him ( Fubara) and he should address the matter within the state. The governor has to be very decisive because he cannot allow people to behave as if there is no law and order in the state.”.……..See More
