John Joel, an admin secretary at New Life Baptist Church in Karu District, Abuja, has told Brekete Family how he was shot in the leg when two police officers were playing with an AK-47 rifle. He explained that on 23 April last year, he was sitting at the church gate waiting for a parcel delivery when the incident happened.
John said that he was chatting with a mason named Yusuf whilst a police officer named Umar sat beside him with his rifle. He said that another police officer named Ahmed, who works security at the church, came back from lunch break and started playing around with Umar, adding that Ahmed grabbed Umar’s AK-47, cocked it, and unpinned it before Umar collected it back.
John Joel said: “I was sitting under a shed just in front of the gate of the church waiting for my parcel. My apartment is upstairs. My office also is upstairs. I live in the church compound. Whilst I was seated, Umar, a police officer who works with Voyage International School, our neighbour, came and sat by my right whilst he was seated on uniform. Someone called Yusuf, he’s a mason and security with the mosque opposite the church. Whilst I was seated, Yusuf came. I was chatting with Yusuf. I did not have a conversation with the policeman. We only greeted. After few minutes, Ahmed Muhammad came. Ahmed Muhammad is the police officer that works with the church. He came from a lunch break. I discovered that he was excited. We greeted. All of a sudden, Ahmed just grabbed the rifle, the AK-47. He cocked it to the air and unpinned it.”……See More
