Juma told Brekete Family that while her son was on admission in National Hospital, she received many calls from people asking what had happened to him. She said some relatives and friends wanted to know whether he had insulted anyone or gotten into trouble, and that she struggled to explain.
She explained that she sometimes lied and told people it was an accident because she felt ashamed to admit that community vigilantes had beaten her son until his head collapsed. She said remembering that they did this to a boy everybody in the area knew as a vegetable seller made her feel like crying.
Juma said: “Sometimes when they ask me what happened, shame will catch me. I will say accident. I won’t tell them that vigilante did this to my boy. When I think that these same people know him as the boy who carries vegetables to market, and they still beat him like that, my heart will cut.”…….See More
