In a recent message on his official X profile, public affairs commentator Mahdi Shehu expressed his worries regarding the readiness and strength of Nigeria’s opposition parties as the upcoming elections approach, particularly in light of Peter Obi’s anticipated switch.
“The speculated intention of the opposition to transition to another party (NDC, PRP, APM) or even some reverting to APC is nothing but a final farewell to their political hopes, with neither a priest nor an imam willing to oversee the final rites. Due to their greed, misjudgments, and lack of awareness, these leaders are prepared to plunge millions of Nigerians into despair,” he stated.
In his commentary, he claimed that many opposition parties lack the capabilities to effectively confront the ruling party, All Progressives Congress. He emphasized that infighting and personal ambitions among the opposition leaders are diminishing their prospects.
He observed that rather than collaborating, numerous politicians are pursuing personal objectives. He believes this disunity hinders their ability to form a powerful and reliable alternative.
He raised concerns about the impartiality of essential democratic institutions and noted that some view the electoral body, Independent National Electoral Commission, as biased towards the ruling party. He added that worries regarding the judiciary’s independence further exacerbate the situation.
The analyst highlighted legal and systemic obstacles within Nigeria’s electoral framework, stating that certain rules in the electoral law may not be beneficial for opposition parties. He argued that these circumstances create an uneven environment that complicates competition for smaller or fractured parties.
Shehu further asserted that the opposition has not fully comprehended the magnitude of the nation’s troubles. He mentioned that many leaders are not adequately concentrating on critical national issues like economic difficulties and insecurity.
