Umeh: “Look At SA That We Liberated From The Black Ppl, Now Killing Nigerians & Asking Us To Go Home

Senator Victor Umeh has expressed concern over the treatment of Nigerians in some foreign countries, particularly South Africa, arguing that Nigeria deserves greater respect given its historical role in supporting African liberation struggles.

Speaking during an interview on SYMFONI, the lawmaker said the country’s declining fortunes have left many citizens vulnerable to discrimination and hardship abroad.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s contributions to the anti-apartheid struggle, Umeh stated, “Look at South Africa that we liberated from the the apartheid operation of the black people. Look at them now killing Nigerians and asking us to go home.”

According to him, Nigeria played a leading role in supporting South Africa’s fight against apartheid through diplomatic efforts, financial assistance, and advocacy for black majority rule.

Umeh recalled how successive Nigerian governments mobilised resources and international support to help end racial segregation in South Africa, adding that many Nigerians believed the sacrifices made during that period would strengthen African unity.

The senator lamented that despite those efforts, Nigerians in South Africa and other countries continue to face hostility, xenophobic attacks, and discrimination.

He argued that the situation reflects broader challenges confronting Nigeria, including economic difficulties, unemployment, and governance concerns that have pushed many citizens to seek opportunities outside the country.

According to Umeh, Nigeria possesses enormous human and natural resources capable of transforming the nation if properly managed. He noted that Nigerians continue to excel in various professions around the world, demonstrating the country’s vast potential.

The senator said he had encountered numerous highly educated Nigerians during his travels, including young scholars studying at some of the world’s leading universities. He maintained that the success of Nigerians abroad shows that the country’s greatest asset remains its people.

Umeh urged leaders at all levels to focus on policies that improve living standards, expand economic opportunities, and restore public confidence in government institutions.

He also stressed the need for national unity, warning against ethnic and regional divisions that could undermine efforts to build a stronger country.

The lawmaker argued that creating a fair and inclusive society would reduce the pressure on citizens to migrate in search of better prospects and would help restore Nigeria’s standing within Africa and the international community.

He further called for reforms that would strengthen democracy, ensure equal opportunities for all citizens, and promote accountability in public service.

Umeh concluded that Nigeria’s future depends on leaders who are willing to place national interest above personal ambition, expressing hope that the country can reclaim its position as a respected leader on the African continent……See More
