According to a report by The Sun on June 1, 2026, factional Labour Party National Vice Chairman (South West), Dr. Abayomi Arabambi, has dismissed suggestions that former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has reached a final stage in his political career amid reports linking him with a possible move to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Speaking during an interview on Arise News, Arabambi addressed ongoing discussions surrounding Obi’s reported political realignment and the broader developments within Nigeria’s opposition landscape. He argued that recent events should not be viewed as the end of Obi’s political journey, stressing that political careers often evolve through changing alliances and strategic repositioning.
Arabambi maintained that interpreting Obi’s alleged move as a permanent political destination would be premature. According to him, Nigeria’s political environment remains highly dynamic, with politicians frequently adapting to shifting circumstances, interests, and alliances. As a result, he said, it is difficult to conclude that any political realignment represents a final chapter in the career of an active political figure.
The Labour Party chieftain further noted that political transitions rarely occur without consequences, particularly when a prominent figure exits a party structure in which they previously played a significant role. He suggested that Obi’s reported departure from Labour Party circles could continue to generate reactions within the party, especially among members who may view such developments as disruptive to the organization’s stability and future direction.
Arabambi also highlighted the competitive nature of Nigeria’s political system, where loyalties and affiliations often shift in response to emerging realities. He argued that politicians remain subject to changing political calculations and evolving partnerships, making long-term predictions difficult.
Commenting on the possible implications of Obi’s reported political movement, Arabambi warned that opposition from elements within the Labour Party could remain a factor in future political engagements. He stated, “If he thinks he has found a safe haven after destabilising the Labour Party, he may soon face serious political pushback from those still within the party structure.”
He concluded that current developments should be seen as part of an ongoing political process rather than a definitive conclusion to Obi’s political ambitions, noting that Nigeria’s political landscape has historically produced unexpected realignments and shifts…..See More
