During an appearance on Arise Television, Julius Abure, the factional National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), clarified ongoing concerns about the legality and duration of his leadership.
Abure firmly dismissed suggestions that his tenure was meant to run until 2025, stating that it was originally scheduled to conclude on June 9, 2024. He explained that before this deadline, the party organised a national convention on March 27, 2024, where a new leadership structure—including his current position—was established in line with party procedures.
He stressed that the process was conducted transparently and in full compliance with electoral guidelines. According to him, the party duly informed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the convention, as required by law, and subsequently submitted all relevant documents and reports following the event.
Abure further noted that INEC has not issued any formal statement disputing or invalidating the outcome of the convention, which he said reinforces the legitimacy of the current leadership.
Reiterating his position, he maintained that the tenure did not lapse before the convention took place. Instead, the party acted proactively by holding the convention ahead of the expiration date, ensuring continuity in leadership.
