Public policy analyst and political communications strategist Kenny Okolugbo has said Governor Siminalayi Fubara made a serious political mistake by obtaining a form to contest for a second term ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Rivers State.
According to a report by Sun Nigeria on Friday May 22, 2026, speaking during an interview, Okolugbo claimed there had been an earlier agreement involving Nyesom Wike that Fubara would not seek re-election after his first term in office.
According to him, the political crisis in Rivers State became worse when it appeared that Fubara intended to contest again in 2027 despite the reported agreement. He argued that this development created distrust among key political figures in the state and deepened the ongoing power struggle.
Okolugbo also said Fubara failed to properly manage his relationship with members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. He noted that most lawmakers in the assembly were against the governor, making it difficult for him to maintain political stability.
He explained that in politics, a governor facing opposition from the majority of lawmakers should focus on reconciliation and rebuilding alliances. He added that failing to do so can weaken a leader politically and leave few options for survival in government.
Okolugbo maintained that Fubara’s second-term ambition played a major role in worsening the political tension in the state.
