According to a report by Vanguard on Friday, May 22, 2026, former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, has warned that the growing trend of politicians seeking political favours and endorsements from the Presidential Villa could destabilise the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Speaking on the programme “State Affairs with Edmund Obilo,” Fayemi expressed concern over what he described as the declining culture of intellectual debate and internal democracy within the party. The former Minister of Solid Minerals Development said the APC had drifted away from the ideals upon which it was founded.
Fayemi, a founding member of the APC, said he recently raised similar concerns during the party’s South-West conference in Lagos. He stated that the increasing reliance on consensus arrangements instead of competitive elections could create resentment among party members and trigger internal crises.
“It would be unfortunate if everybody is running to Aso Rock because they want something,” he warned.
The former governor also rejected suggestions that President Bola Tinubu was imposing candidates on the party, describing the President as one of the APC’s founding fathers who is currently burdened with the challenges of governing the country.
Fayemi maintained that many party members may simply agree with Tinubu’s decisions, but cautioned that the APC risks losing its founding vision if it continues to abandon open political competition and internal debate……See More
