Emotions ran high on Friday as family members, friends, colleagues, and sympathisers gathered in Ogbomoso to bid farewell to Adesiyan Joel Adegboye, the 49-year-old teacher killed during last week’s deadly attack on schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
According to The Nation on Friday, Adegboye was laid to rest at his residence in Owolake, Ogbomoso, amid tears and mourning from loved ones and members of the community.
The deceased was among the teachers killed when armed attackers riding motorcycles launched coordinated assaults on Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community Grammar School; and L.A Primary School, Esiele.
The attacks reportedly claimed several lives and resulted in the abduction of pupils and school staff, including a vice principal, Mrs. Alamu Folawe, leaving residents devastated and heightening fears over insecurity in schools across the state.
A funeral service was earlier held at Ayegun Baptist Church, Ogbomoso, where family members, colleagues, and officials of the Nigeria Union of Teachers paid glowing tributes to Adegboye, describing him as a dedicated educator who impacted many lives.
Delivering a sermon during the service, Rev. Paul Olaleye urged the bereaved family to seek comfort in God and avoid thoughts of revenge.
“Death does not announce when it will come, so everyone must be prepared because after death comes either eternal joy or eternal sorrow,” the cleric said.
Many residents at the burial described the late teacher as hardworking and committed to the growth of his students, while also calling on authorities to strengthen security around schools in Oriire and other parts of Oyo State.
The tragic incident has continued to generate outrage and sorrow, with renewed calls for justice and better protection for teachers, pupils, and school communities……See More
