Frank Tietie, a lawyer, has stated that a large part of Nigeria’s Electoral Act would be declared invalid if the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) fully asserts its constitutional independence.
In a video shared by ARISE TV on Friday May 22 2026, Frank described it as a flaw in the country’s electoral system to allow the National Assembly to make extensive laws regulating elections. He said the Constitution gives INEC the responsibility to conduct elections, regulate political parties, and set rules to ensure free, fair, and credible polls.
He said the National Assembly was not meant to have so much control over elections through the Electoral Act, as it does now. According to him, if the Constitution is properly interpreted, many parts of the law would no longer stand.
