The Oyo State Government has ordered the suspension of excursions, inter-house sports, field trips, and other activities taking students outside school premises over rising security concerns in parts of the state.
According to Punch, the directive was contained in a circular issued on Friday, May 22, by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology to the chairmen of TESCOM and SUBEB, Tutors-General, principals of secondary schools, and head teachers of both public and private primary schools.
Oyo Government stated that, the precautionary measure became necessary following the recent abduction of students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.
School authorities were instructed to immediately halt all off-campus activities, including excursions, sporting competitions, and field trips, pending further notice.
The ministry also directed administrators to ensure students remain within school premises during school hours and advised them to promptly report any suspicious movement or security threat around schools to relevant law enforcement agencies.
“The directive takes immediate effect and will remain in place until the security situation improves,” the circular stated.
The action comes in response to the May 16 attack on three schools in Oriire LGA, where gunmen reportedly killed at least two persons and abducted dozens of teachers and students.
