According to a report by Punch, 42-year-old mechanic Aliyu Muhammed has questioned the actions of the police following the killing of his wife, Ummulkhairi, insisting that even if the allegation against her had been true, she should have been allowed to face due process rather than mob justice.
Muhammed alleged that his wife was rescued from an angry crowd and taken to a police station but was later dragged outside by the Divisional Police Officer despite pleas from his elder sister, who was with her at the station.
According to him, the DPO allegedly ignored warnings that the waiting mob would kill her and pulled her out of the station, where she was attacked and set ablaze.
He said the incident has left his family devastated, adding that his wife was killed without any investigation or court finding establishing her guilt.
Speaking on the justice he is seeking, Muhammed said the conduct of the divisional police officer should be thoroughly investigated.
He also appealed to the public to reject jungle justice, stressing that allegations alone should never be treated as proof of guilt.
“The public should learn that when someone is accused of an offense, people have no right to take the law into their own hands. There are established procedures, from the Village Head to the District Head and the Emir. We also have vigilantes and the police.
“Even the police do not determine guilt until there is a proper investigation. You cannot simply accuse someone without credible evidence. There must be due process, and only a court of law has the authority to determine guilt and punish an offender,” he said.
