1966: Before I Crossed Sahara Desert I Was Made To Sign Death Warrant At A Morocco Checkpoint -Jibunoh

Chief Dr Newton Jibunoh, Nigerian explorer and environmentalist, has spoken about how he was made to sign a “death warrant” before he was allowed to cross the Sahara Desert alone during his 1966 journey from London to Lagos by road

In an interview with News Central TV, Jibunoh said authorities at a checkpoint in Morocco told him that travellers were not allowed to cross the desert alone

Jibunoh said he pleaded with the authorities to allow him to cross alone. He said they eventually agreed on the condition that he sign what he called a “death warrant” and he did

In Jibunoh’s words: “Before I left the checkpoint in Morocco I was made to sign a death warrant because I didn’t meet all the requirements. You have to be not less than two in the car but I was alone in the car. Or you must wait and join a convoy and I waited for 6 days, I didn’t see any vehicle. I had to plead with them because at that stage I was running out of many things. So they had to prepare a death warrant for me to sign”
