Halima Abubakar has revealed that her landlady attempted to evict her from her Lagos home after only three weeks of rent default. Speaking on Channels Television, the actress said she was shocked that in a city where tenants can stay a year without paying, she was being pushed out after less than a month.
“It is just a month default. Lagos that they will stay one year, they will not pay house rent. A month, it is not even up to a month. I think it is just three weeks. And this woman was ready to push me out,” Halima said.
She said the landlady refused to accept her money and insisted she must leave. Realising there was a bigger plan at play, Halima got her lawyer involved. “I requested for her to write me a notice. I had to get my lawyer because I was talking to her without the law.”
Her legal team placed a restraining order on the caretaker. “They did not even know what a restraining order was. They were surprised that I knew,” Halima said. The caretaker could not enter the house for three months, giving Halima time to find a new place peacefully.
