The Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, has said that anytime a policeman dies, the force prays to Almighty God to forgive their sins and holds services for them, and the families of fallen personnel are taken care of.
In a video posted by Arise News, Disu made the remarks in Abuja following a rescue operation in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State. Security operatives moved swiftly to rescue victims from kidnappers, but the mission came at a painful cost.
Sergeant John Jerome Abena paid the ultimate price while other officers sustained varying degrees of injuries. The Nigerian Police Force gathered to remember the fallen colleague and reflect on the price many officers continue to pay in service to the nation.
Addressing the press, Disu said that whenever members of the public see a policeman on the streets, at a checkpoint, or in patrol cars moving around, they should know the officers are working to protect lives and property.
He added that the Orire operation has provided valuable lessons for future security operations. According to him, the synergy among agencies was top-notch, with everyone contributing men and expertise, and he said such collaboration will continue.
Disu appealed to the public for cooperation with security agencies. He urged citizens to report suspicious activities, stating that if people see something, they should say something.
In his words, “And every time I talk, I want them to know whenever you see a policeman on the streets, whenever you see a policeman at the checking point, you see the policemen in their patrol cars moving around; they are moving around to protect lives and properties, which is what they joined the job to do.”
