Richie Charles, a 52-year-old Nigerian who said he spent more than 29 years in prison for a crime, has shared his memories of meeting Major Hamza Mustafa and the driver of the late MKO Abiola’s wife while they were at Kirikiri prison.
Speaking during an interview on Yanga FM, according to Charles, Major Mustafa made a lasting impact on many inmates through his kindness and generosity. He said Mustafa regularly provided food for thousands of prisoners and supported many inmates in ways that impressed him deeply.
Charles also recalled that after Major Mustafa was released from prison, he reportedly sent a large amount of money to be shared among the inmates. However, he claimed the money was handed to the head warder for distribution, but the prisoners never received any of it.
He described Mustafa as someone who treated him with kindness and often called him “small.” Charles said he would never forget the former military officer because of the compassion he showed to people behind bars.
He further claimed that Major Mustafa contributed to improving life in Kirikiri prison by building a lawn tennis court and a mosque for inmates.
Charles said the experience changed the way he viewed Mustafa, adding that despite criticism directed at the former military officer, his personal experience was of a man who consistently helped prisoners and showed concern for their welfare.
