A returnee from South Africa, Itoro Richard, has alleged that his wife, a South African national, was told by South African natives that she would be arrested for marrying a foreigner.
He said in an interview with Arise TV, “My wife was told she would be arrested because as a South African national she is married to a foreign national and that we should take our families and leave.” He added that foreigners are often demeaned with derogatory names, saying, “They go so far as to demean your character as a human being, using derogatory names they call foreign nationals ‘kwere-kwere,’ meaning someone from outside who speaks a language they don’t understand, and other slurs.”
Richard said his experience in South Africa was pleasant at first but grew hostile over time. According to him, the hostility stems from how foreigners are perceived, noting that many South Africans do not simply see them as foreign nationals but as outsiders altogether.
