The kidnappers’ acts, according to security expert and lawyer Bulama Bukarti, “exposed substantial challenges in Nigeria’s fight against insecurity,” and she is worried about what happened after the kidnapping and murder of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar.
While explaining the circumstances behind the former army officer’s death, Bukarti made the comments during an interview that aired on Channels Television on Sunday, 14 June 2026.
During his interview, Bukarti spoke mostly about the abductors’ “public nature” in their negotiations. He claims that while the retired general was in captivity, the kidnappers made their demands known and pressured the government for concessions.
In order to secure the release of the military general, “they were negotiating publicly saying this is what we want,” Bukarti explained, adding that the group was also informing the government about the members of their group who had been incarcerated.
The specialist in security claimed that the kidnappers’ daring betrays a disturbing tendency in which criminal organisations actively engage authorities while conducting their activities. Such events, he said, make one wonder whether security agencies are up to the task of preventing and destroying abduction networks in time to prevent high-profile attacks.
