In a video shared on Advocacy for Good Governance on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, Mr. Hyacinth, a political analyst with The Hyacinth Network, spoke about the leadership styles of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, expressing concerns about the treatment of political opponents in Nigeria.
Hyacinth recalled Obasanjo’s time as president, noting that despite his background as a former military leader, he did not bully Tinubu when the latter was involved in political disagreements with the Federal Government. He used the comparison to question the political atmosphere under the current administration.
Speaking during the video, Hyacinth stated, “Obasanjo was once the President of the country and a former military man, yet he never bullied Tinubu.” He made the statement while discussing what he described as growing political intimidation and concerns about the independence of democratic institutions under Tinubu’s administration.
The political analyst also recalled that Obasanjo faced legal challenges during his presidency, including cases involving Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. He argued that the political environment at the time allowed disagreements to be addressed through legal processes.
Hyacinth further questioned the state of Nigeria’s judiciary, alleging that public confidence in the courts had declined. He expressed concern about the influence of political leaders on democratic institutions and called attention to the importance of judicial independence.
He also criticised governors and other political officeholders whom he accused of failing to defend democratic principles and the rights of opposition parties. According to him, elected leaders should be able to exercise their constitutional responsibilities without fear of political consequences.
He concluded that Nigeria needed to strengthen its democratic institutions, uphold the rule of law and ensure that political disagreements could be addressed without intimidation.
