When Buhari Took Over In 1983, He Fought Maitatsine And Chased The Chadian Rebels Back To Chad -Ardo

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Umar Ardo, Convener of the League of Northern Democrats, recalled the early years of late former President Muhammadu Buhari’s leadership and the actions that helped shape his reputation in Nigeria.

Ardo explained that he was in his final year at the university in 1983 when Buhari took over the government, noting that the administration launched a campaign against corruption and took action against security threats during that period.

He also recalled Buhari’s response to the Maitatsine crisis and his pursuit of Chadian rebels back into Chad, adding that these actions helped establish Buhari’s reputation and shaped his administration’s connection with the earlier Murtala Mohammed and Olusegun Obasanjo regime.

In Ardo’s words: “When Buhari took over in 1983, we were in our final year at the university. His administration launched a war against corruption. The way he fought Maitatsine and chased the Chadian rebels back to Chad helped him establish a niche for himself, and he described his regime as an offshoot of the Murtala-Obasanjo regime.”
