According to former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, hunger and the absence of strong political principles are major reasons why politicians in Nigeria frequently change their loyalty and turn against people who once supported their rise to power.
Amaechi made this observation during an interview on Rapid TV where he spoke about his experiences in Nigerian politics and the changing relationships he has had with some politicians he previously gave opportunities to serve in government.
Reflecting on his time as governor of Rivers State, the former minister explained that he appointed several individuals to important positions during his administration. However, some of those who benefited from his government have since become his critics, while others have moved to different political camps.
He mentioned former senator Magnus Abe, who served as Secretary to the State Government during his administration, as one of the people he gave an opportunity to serve. He also referred to Nyesom Wike, who currently serves as a minister, noting that Wike was his Chief of Staff at the time.
Amaechi also recalled appointing several commissioners who later became politically opposed to him. Despite the criticism and changes in political relationships, he said he does not allow such developments to make him bitter or constantly complain about those involved.
According to him, he has chosen to pray for the people rather than allow their actions to become a source of continuous anger. He also explained that he often advises his wife not to be surprised by the behaviour of some politicians, as political loyalty in Nigeria can change depending on people’s personal circumstances.
The former governor argued that hunger and economic difficulties have a major influence on political decisions in the country. He suggested that many politicians place personal survival and financial interests above loyalty or previously held positions.
Amaechi further observed that only a small number of politicians remain committed to their principles, describing the lack of strong values as a major challenge in Nigerian politics.
His comments highlight his concerns about the nature of political relationships in the country, where individuals who once worked closely together can become opponents when their interests or circumstances change.
