1993: I Rejected N800k Abiola Gave Me, He Said “I’ve Never Given Anyone Money That Rejected It -Sowore

In an exclusive interview with Sahara TV, Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), stated that he rejected 800,000 naira offered to him by the late Chief MKO Abiola after the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

Sowore said he was the University of Lagos Students’ Union president when military ruler Ibrahim Babangida annulled the election. He said he and other students organised protests against the annulment

Sowore said he and some students later visited Abiola’s house, where they found several politicians gathered with bags of money. He said he told Abiola that many of the politicians there would eventually betray him.

Sowore said Abiola then offered him 800,000 naira from a bag of cash, but he refused it. He said Abiola was surprised and told him he had never offered money to someone who turned it down

In Sowore’s words: “He had a duffle bag full of cash, he counted 800 thousand naira and gave me. I said ‘Chief, I didn’t come here to collect money so take your money’. He said ‘I have never given anybody money before that rejected it'”
