I Went To Pick My Husband Bag, Heard Gunshots, When I Came Out, He Had Been Shot-Masussuka’s Wife

According to a report by Punch Newspaper on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, Hajiya Fatima Masussuka, the wife of slain Katsina Islamic cleric Sheikh Yahaya Ibrahim Masussuka, has narrated how gunmen shot and killed her husband in Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area of Katsina State on Monday evening.

She described the incident while recounting the circumstances surrounding the killing of the cleric.

Fatima spoke with journalists at their residence in Dutsin-Ma on Tuesday, explaining that the attack occurred shortly after her husband left home to attend a teaching session with his Almajirai, who are Islamic pupils under his instruction.

According to her account, the cleric had prepared to leave the house for his usual teaching activities when he realised that he had forgotten his bag.

The discovery prompted him to return inside briefly before proceeding to the location where he taught his students.

She explained that she accompanied her husband outside their residence as he prepared to leave for the teaching session.

However, after discovering that he had forgotten his bag, she returned indoors to get it, leaving him outside as he prepared to continue his journey.

Fatima said the incident happened suddenly, leaving her unaware of the danger confronting her husband until she heard gunshots.

She explained that she heard four shots before coming out of the house to determine what had happened, only to discover that her husband had been shot by the attackers.

The widow recounted that she had not anticipated that her husband would be attacked moments after leaving their residence.

Her account provided details of the final moments before the cleric was shot, including her brief return indoors after he realised he had forgotten an item needed for his journey.

Recounting her experience, she said, “My name is Fatima. I felt very bad. I accompanied him outside the house so he could go to where he teaches his students, the Almajirai, but I returned inside because he had forgotten his bag.

“Before I knew what was happening, I heard four gunshots. When I came out, I discovered that he had been shot.”
