In a recent interview on Channels Television, Kenneth Okonkwo, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), spoke about opposition politics, coalition movements, and the growing political alignments ahead of the 2027 presidential election in Nigeria. The discussion focused on the structure of opposition unity and the implications of emerging political blocs outside the main coalition framework.
During the interview, Okonkwo stated, “They are working for Tinubu in the NDC; the NDC is Tinubu’s party.” He made the remark while reacting to the decision of some opposition figures to operate outside the coalition movement currently being championed by the ADC.
He explained that the coalition was designed as a unified platform for opposition leaders seeking to mount a coordinated challenge against the ruling government in the next general election. According to him, fragmentation within the opposition camp risks weakening its electoral strength and potentially handing advantage to the incumbent administration.
Okonkwo argued that when influential political actors choose to align with alternative platforms rather than the central coalition structure, it creates division that may ultimately affect the opposition’s chances at the polls. He maintained that political coordination is essential if opposition parties hope to compete effectively in a presidential election.
He further stated that internal disagreements and parallel political movements often result in vote splitting, which he described as one of the major factors that has historically affected opposition outcomes in Nigeria’s electoral politics. According to him, unity of purpose remains a critical requirement for any serious attempt to unseat a sitting government.
Okonkwo also emphasized that the coalition movement was built on the idea of consolidating opposition strength across party lines, ideologies, and regional interests. He said the goal was to present a strong, united front capable of mobilizing voters and resources effectively ahead of 2027.
The ADC chieftain noted that political alignments in Nigeria are often fluid, but stressed that the success of any opposition arrangement depends on discipline, loyalty to agreed structures, and commitment to collective strategy. He warned that deviation from such arrangements could undermine long-term political objectives…….See More
