The competition for the Imo West (Orlu Zone) senatorial position is escalating as the 2027 elections approach, with significant political players preparing for a crucial battle within the APC.
As reported by The Punch, leaders from the All Progressives Congress in Imo State have endorsed Governor Hope Uzodimma as their favored candidate for the Imo West senatorial seat. This support occurs even though the current officeholder, Osita Izunaso, has expressed ambitions to pursue another term in the Nigerian Senate.
At a meeting last Saturday, key APC members from Orlu Zone, headed by state party chairman Austin Onyedebelu, formally acquired the party’s Expression of Interest and Nomination forms for Uzodimma’s senatorial campaign in 2027. The group conveyed that their choice signifies the common wish of the zone for the governor to serve in the 11th National Assembly, amid rumors that Uzodimma might be considering the Senate Presidency.
While presenting the forms to the chief of staff, Nnamdi Anyaehie, Onyedebelu encouraged aides and supporters to convince Uzodimma to accept this opportunity and finish the necessary steps before the May 5, 2026 deadline. He pointed out that this initiative was completely supported and funded by stakeholders from Orlu Zone, framing it as a combined request from the community.
The leadership of the state APC has also urged other candidates in the region to withdraw, asserting that Uzodimma is the party’s agreed choice for the position.
Nevertheless, the developing competition is still uncertain. Former governor Rochas Okorocha has also obtained his nomination form, indicating his desire to return to the Senate and possibly challenge Uzodimma during the party’s primary elections. This information was shared by one of his close associates, Darlington Ibekwe, who suggested a fierce political contest within the party.
In the meantime, attempts to get a response from Senator Izunaso were not successful. His media aide, David Nwaenyi, noted that the senator was engaged with a pressing national issue and would reply later, although no additional comments had been received by the time this report was filed……See More
