Former Nigerian legislator Shehu Sani has encouraged the youth of Nigeria to engage more proactively in local politics, cautioning that remaining disengaged may result in a permanent exclusion from the nation’s leadership avenues.
In a message published on his verified X account on April 12, 2026, Sani commented on what he termed the increasing disinterest among the youth during the ongoing party congresses occurring in various wards across the country. He observed that numerous young individuals are not involved in political events nor are they acquainted with essential party frameworks at the community level.
He stated that although party congresses are presently taking place in different wards, a considerable number of younger men are not participating and are not even aware of who their ward officials are. He compared this scenario with the surge in political aspirations among their contemporaries and even younger individuals who are preparing to run in the upcoming elections.
Sani further noted a noticeable generational transition in the political landscape, where the offspring of long-established political families are strategizing to inherit power and authority. He cautioned that those who choose to remain passive may soon shift their support from the current leaders to their offspring and eventually their grandchildren.
The former senator expressed concern about some youths confining their political involvement to online activism, especially when expressing their frustrations about governance through social media. He emphasized that while such outlets are legitimate, they are insufficient for bringing about substantial change.
Pointing to demonstrations that typically take place at Unity Fountain in Abuja, Sani warned against spending years protesting without striving to become integrated into the leadership framework. He urged the young population to evolve from being mere spectators to becoming active contributors within the political domain.
He further claimed that the primary distinction between those in office and those not lies in their readiness to embrace risks. He asserted that current leaders entered the “muddy ring” of politics despite the uncertainties involved, while many young people are reluctant to follow suit.
Sani’s comments contribute to the ongoing dialogue regarding the inclusion of youth in Nigeria’s political framework, particularly as preparations gradually begin ahead of upcoming electoral periods……See More
