According to a report by Daily Post on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has stated that the South-East region made what he described as a wrong political calculation during the 2023 general elections, adding that the outcome of the election in the zone would not be repeated in the 2027 electoral cycle.
He made the comment while hosting political leaders from the Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Government House in Owerri.
The delegation was led by Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, who visited with other party stakeholders for discussions centered on political engagement in the region.
The governor, while reflecting on the 2023 general elections, described the voting behaviour in the South-East as a political error, noting that although different political preferences existed across the region, there remained a pressing need for unity among political actors regardless of party affiliation or personal interests.
He further emphasized that political stakeholders in the South-East should strengthen collaboration and work together toward common regional objectives, stressing that such cooperation was necessary for stability and for advancing the collective interests of the zone in future electoral processes.
Uzodimma also recalled that in the 2023 presidential election, the South-East overwhelmingly supported the Labour Party candidate, Peter Obi, with the region delivering significant votes in his favour compared to other presidential candidates across the country.
He noted that the voting pattern in the region reflected a strong political alignment at the time, which influenced the electoral outcome in the South-East, while indicating that future political engagements would require more coordinated strategies and closer alignment among leaders in the region.
