BAT Moved National Debt To N200Trn, After Removing Subsidy, He BorrowedMore Than Last 4Presidents -Akah

Political activist Peter Akah has raised concerns over Nigeria’s rising debt profile, criticising the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during an interview on News Central TV.

Speaking on the programme, Akah commented on fiscal policies since the removal of fuel subsidy and the government’s borrowing patterns, arguing that the economic direction has significantly increased national indebtedness.

He said: “Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu has moved the National debt to almost N200trillion. After removing subsidy, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has borrowed more than the last 4 presidents combined.”

Akah’s comments come amid ongoing public debate over Nigeria’s debt sustainability and fiscal reforms introduced since the current administration assumed office. The federal government has repeatedly defended its borrowing strategy, arguing that funds are directed toward infrastructure development, social investment programmes, and economic stabilisation measures following the removal of fuel subsidy in 2023.

The debate has remained central to discussions on economic policy, especially as citizens contend with inflation, currency fluctuations, and cost-of-living challenges across the country.

Akah’s remarks are expected to add to ongoing political discourse around government borrowing, fiscal transparency, and the economic impact of subsidy removal. The administration has maintained that its policies are aimed at long-term growth, even as opposition voices and civil society groups continue to scrutinise the scale and structure of public debt. Discussions on the matter are likely to persist as Nigeria navigates its current economic challenges…..See More
