Pastor Jerry Kegi Hamilton, who was an instrumentalist in the late Fela Kuti’s band, has stated that he once stole money belonging to Fela during a live show at Fela’s Shrine
In an interview with Rufai Oseni on Nevon HQ, Hamilton said that after he spent all the money he decided to return to the shrine. He said that while he was on his way to the shrine, some young men warned him not to go there because Fela had instructed some boys there to beat him up
Hamilton said he ignored the warning and when he got to the shrine was severely beaten. He said he could have died if not for the policemen who eventually rescued him.
In Hamilton’s words: “When I got to Ikeja plaza some boys met me there and said, ‘Don’t go to the shrine, Fela has ordered the boys to beat you up’.
