Omoyele Sowore, the activist and former presidential candidate, criticised comments attributed to presidential media aide Daniel Bwala regarding income comparisons between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, arguing that such claims ignored the realities facing ordinary Nigerians and workers daily.
According to a video posted on the official YouTube channel of SYMFONI on Thursday, July 16, 2026, while responding to recent public comments, Sowore challenged Bwala’s comparison of Nigerian and British earnings, questioning the reasoning behind the argument presented.
Sowore said Bwala’s position overlooked broader living conditions beyond wages, maintaining that income comparisons should consider access to essential services, purchasing power, infrastructure, healthcare, education and other factors influencing the overall standard of living experienced by ordinary citizens.
During the interview, he stated, “if you are saying that somebody who is earning ₦60,000 in Nigeria is better than somebody who is earning in the UK, that means you don’t understand what they call quality of life,” while disputing the comparison.
He argued that assessing people’s wellbeing requires considering living conditions alongside earnings, adding that salaries alone cannot accurately reflect economic realities where inflation, unreliable public services and rising household costs continue affecting millions of Nigerians across the country.
Sowore further suggested that policymakers should focus on improving living standards through better infrastructure, stable economic policies and stronger social services instead of making wage comparisons that, according to him, fail to capture everyday experiences for many families nationwide.
