Otukpo-Nobi resident, Mary Jack, has recounted the terrifying moments she and other villagers fled into the bush after suspected armed herdsmen reportedly attacked their community in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State.
Speaking during an interview on News Central TV on Thursday, 16 July, 2026, Jack described the chaos that unfolded during the attack, saying the sound of gunfire forced residents to abandon their homes without hesitation. According to her, those who fled hid in nearby bushes while the attackers allegedly unleashed violence on the community.
Narrating her experience, she said: “When we heard gunshots in the other side. We ran to the bush. When we were in the bush, we noticed that they were burning our houses and killed one of my uncles living in this house.”
Her account highlights the devastating impact of the attack on families in the community, many of whom were displaced after their homes were destroyed. Residents have continued to recount how they watched helplessly from hiding as their properties went up in flames, with some also losing loved ones during the violence.
The reported attack has added to growing concerns over recurring insecurity in parts of Benue State, where several communities have faced repeated assaults blamed on armed herdsmen.
