According to a recent video by Morayo Show on Monday, July 13, 2026, media practitioner Morayo Afolabi has accused Nigerian news outlets of biased coverage regarding kidnapping incidents across the country, claiming disproportionate attention was given to the recent Oriire abduction in the Southwest while similar crises in the North received minimal coverage.
Speaking on a monitored program, Afolabi argued that the media’s lopsided reporting has created a distorted national perception, suggesting that lives in the North are valued less than those in the South.
The Oriire kidnapping, which involved multiple victims, dominated prime time broadcasts and social media discourse for days, whereas frequent mass abductions in states like Kaduna, Zamfara, and Borno often receive fleeting mentions or are buried in briefs.
“This selective journalism undermines national unity and fails in the media’s duty to hold power accountable equally,” Afolabi stated.
She urged editors to adopt balanced reportage that reflects the true scale of insecurity across all geopolitical zones, emphasizing that every Nigerian life matters regardless of region.
Critics, however, argue that media houses follow audience interest and news value, though Afolabi insists professional ethics must override commercial considerations in life-and-death matters.
