Professor Josh Amupitan, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, firmly rejected allegations that INEC under his leadership is being manipulated to help create a one-party state in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections. He made the denial during a wide-ranging interview with Arise News in response to accusations from the ADC and the Peoples Democratic Party.
He said the Nigerian constitution clearly recognises the country as a multi-party democracy, and INEC’s conduct has consistently reflected that position. Amupitan said the decisions that caused the current grievances were not taken arbitrarily but were compelled by court orders.
He said: “I am not guilty as charged. Let me say it very clearly. I am not a party to the plan of anyone to turn Nigeria into a one-party state. By the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Nigeria is a multi-party state and this is recognised by the constitution and the electoral act. Look at the last FCT area council election. There were many parties that contested. I think about 10 political parties.”…..See More
