Yusuf: I Am A Muslim And A Northerner, & I Do Not Think Gumi Represents What We Stand For As Muslims

In a recent interview on Channels TV, on Saturday, May 30, 2026, Baba Yusuf, strategist, policy advisor, and Group CEO of Global Investment & Trade Co (GITC), addressed the ongoing debate surrounding insecurity and public commentary on negotiations with armed groups. The conversation also touched on the role of religious leaders in shaping public opinion on sensitive national issues.

During the programme, Yusuf expressed concern about narratives that, in his view, could create confusion regarding the position of mainstream Muslims on violence and criminality. He emphasized the importance of separating religious teachings from actions that may appear to justify unlawful conduct.

Speaking during the interview, Yusuf stated, “I am a Muslim and a Northerner, and I do not think Gumi represents what we stand for as Muslims.” He used the remark to distance himself from positions associated with Sheikh Ahmad Gumi regarding engagement with bandits and other violent actors.

Expanding on the issue, Yusuf argued that the majority of Muslims reject violence against innocent people and support efforts aimed at protecting lives and communities. He maintained that religious leaders should use their influence to promote peace, accountability, and responsible citizenship.

He also noted that insecurity has had devastating consequences across northern Nigeria, affecting families, livelihoods, and educational opportunities. According to him, public figures must remain mindful of the impact their statements can have on vulnerable populations.

He concluded that religious leadership carries enormous responsibility and that national conversations on security should reflect values of justice, compassion, and respect for the rule of law throughout the country…..See More
