The slaying of ex-Libyan visionary leader Muammar Gaddafi has ignited numerous discussions and divided Africa into two blocs. Others supported the leader and some were completely antipathetic.
1. Having a house was deemed a human right in Libya under Gaddafi’s regime. He had even declared that he and his parents would not buy a residence until every Libyan had one. He built many houses which were given to every citizen.
2. During his rule, the state would give all newlyweds $ 50000. This aimed to help them start their new life with ease.
3. Medical healthcare and education were both offered for free. Less than 25% of the people were literate before he came to power, but that percentage jumped to 83 during his reign.
4. Anyone who preferred to start farming as a profession was given help by the government. They were given free land, required equipment, seeds, and livestock.
5. Any citizen in need of medication that was not obtainable in Libya would be financed by the government to seek it outside the country. They would also be funded throughout their schooling.
6. Every citizen who wanted to buy a vehicle received a government subsidy of 50% off the cost. A litre of petrol cost $0.14. There were no electricity bills in the whole country.
7. Banks were not charging interest on loans. Any citizen could borrow cash and repay it without extra charges.
Despite some of his weaknesses, we may conclude that he enabled Libya to thrive in one of the world’s most strong economies. Since his demise, life in Libya has never been the same….. See More
