Political activist and Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) senatorial aspirant, Aisha Yesufu, has said part of her motivation for contesting the Federal Capital Territory senatorial seat in 2027 is to help the opposition lock down Abuja ahead of the general elections.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Sunday May 24, 2026, Yesufu said her senatorial ambition goes beyond personal political aspirations, describing it as part of a broader strategy to galvanise support for the opposition in the nation’s capital.
According to her, she intends to offer Abuja residents what she described as a credible and inspiring alternative capable of mobilising voters and generating enthusiasm ahead of the polls.
“But most importantly, part of the reason I am running for the senatorial seat is also to ensure that we are locking down Abuja — that we have a candidate who can resonate with and inspire passion among the people, a candidate that the Abuja residents will see and feel proud of, and will want to come out for,” she said.
The activist-turned-politician added that there was a need to present voters in the FCT with an option they could identify with and passionately support.
Yesufu, a prominent supporter of Peter Obi, is seeking the NDC ticket for the FCT Senate seat ahead of the party’s primaries scheduled to hold later this month.
