According to a report by Vanguard on Sunday, May 24, 2026, more disturbing details have emerged in the killing of Wendy Achumba, a student of the College of Nursing, Obowo, following the arrest of one of the prime suspects, Onyema Okonkwo.
Okonkwo was apprehended by vigilant youths of Umuadara, Umulogho community in Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State after a thorough local investigation led by youth leader Chidiebere Iweajunwa. His arrest followed the circulation of a video in which he reportedly made confessional statements concerning the incident.
Community sources disclosed that the victim was alone in her apartment when the attack occurred, as her two roommates had travelled out for their nursing practical exercise, leaving her by herself in the compound.
During interrogation, Onyema Okonkwo admitted that he and another suspect, identified as Emmanuel, approached the victim with immoral intentions but met resistance. According to him, “We wanted her to give us sex, she refused.”
The statement has triggered outrage across the community, with many residents expressing anger over the brutality of the act and demanding swift prosecution of everyone connected to the crime. Several residents described the confession as deeply disturbing and called for justice to be served without compromise.
Following his arrest, Onyema Okonkwo was handed over to security operatives for further investigation, while efforts have intensified to apprehend Emmanuel, who is believed to have fled after the incident.
As of the time of filing this report, the spokesperson of the Imo State Police Command, Henry Okoye, had yet to release an official statement on the matter.
