Before Chibok, B’Haram Went To Buni Yadi School And Killed 59 Boys And Said To Girls “Go Home”-Oyebode

Dr. Aisha Muhammed Oyebode has explained that public anger following the abduction of the Chibok schoolgirls was heightened by an earlier Boko Haram attack on another secondary school in Yobe State weeks before the mass kidnapping.

Speaking during an interview on the Rainbow Book Club while discussing her book, The Stolen Daughters of Chibok, Oyebode said many Nigerians were already traumatized by rising attacks on schools before the Chibok incident occurred in April 2014. According to her, the insurgents had earlier attacked the Federal Government College in Buni Yadi, Yobe State, killing dozens of male students in a brutal assault that shocked the nation.

Providing background to the atmosphere at the time, Oyebode recalled that the earlier attack had revealed Boko Haram’s hostility toward Western education and particularly toward girls attending school. She noted that the militants not only carried out mass killings but also sent a disturbing message about the place of women in society.

“A month and a half before Chibok, Boko Haram had gone into Buni Yadi, and school in Yobe State and it’s a federal government college and killed 59 boys and put the girls in the Assembly Hall and said to them ‘go home, school is not a place for girls,’” she said……See More
